This summer, we worked with kids at Camp Artpace to create this series of beautiful panoramas in a project inspired by our Window Works piece, Thirteen Views in Arid Lands.

Each kid picked a pose from a stack of artwork-themed postcards that we brought; then we all went up to the roof, stood in a circle, and acted out our chosen postcard pose. One kid would take the camera, stand in the center of the circle, and take pictures while turning to create a 360º panorama, which we then printed out and assembled.

Announcing PBL's new series of 360-degree scrolling landscape vistas, shot in time lapse and presented in a set of peephole cabinets, viewable through the windows from the sidewalk outside Artpace.

Our panoramas were made using an intervalometer and a robotic tripod head that we designed, built, and programmed.

Revealed in these vistas, clouds and weather spread through the sky, winds shake plants, humans and animals dart almost imperceptibly.

The videos, their presentation, and the pair of cabinets allude to the ancient traditional Chinese landscape meditation scroll, hand-cranked canvas panoramas of 19th century North America, the enormous panorama rotundas, and early penny arcade peephole spectacles. Text that appears in the videos was borrowed from reports and journals of U.S. soldiers looking for the last free Apaches in the Southwest in the 1880s, as well as quotations from the Apaches themselves, including Geronimo.

This exhibition is supported in part by the Texas Idea Fund and in part by The Cultural Collaborative, a division of the City of San Antonio's Office of Cultural Affairs.

First of all, thanks to everyone who came to fill up the Heights Theater. You were a great audience, and we really enjoyed meeting those of you who came to talk to us after the performance. Thanks also to Aurora Picture Show, and the Heights Theater.

We're very happy with how the performance came out, and hopefully we'll be repeating it at other venues in the future. But being able to perform it at the site that got burned down for daring to show the original film, well, there's no substituting the historical thrill of it.

Of course, we've got other projects planned as well, but they're not mutually exclusive. Stay tuned!

I Am Curious Remix

As part of Aurora Picture Show's Media Archaeology festival, PBL will go to the Heights Theater in Houston this Friday, September 17th to reminisce about arsons past with a live cinema performance. You could think of it as a seance for a controversial movie, or a Citizen Kane-like post mortem examination of a puzzling reaction. What was this film, why did it draw fire, and did it deserve it?

In June of 1969, arsonists set fire to Houston's Heights Theater during a run of the controversial film "I am Curious (Yellow)," by Swedish writer/director, Vilgot Sjöman. Live cinema artists Potter-Belmar Labs will investigate this history within the context of late-60s Houston, taking into account the broader censorship movement of the age as well as the phenomenon of reactionary violence in our own time. Potter-Belmar's live cinema performance will center on a remix of Sjoman’s film, exploiting the kaleidoscope shape of the film in their performance. Mature content warning.

Jason Jay Stevens (aka spokeNine, and one half of Potter-Belmar Labs) will perform a new composition, "Six Strata and the Planetary Boundary," an eight channel sound work for advanced and primitive electronic instruments, with samples from Shostakovich, LBJ, and decades of field recording.

The headliner is Kamama, a collaboration between Audrey Chen (cello, voice, electronics) and Luca Marini (percussion). Chen lives in in Baltimore, where she is an active member of the free improv scene. Luca Marini currently lives in New York.

Also performing--for their first time together--the quartet of Putnam/Rivas/Rubio/Woodard, a supergroup of local improvisers, including members of The Islands and the Sea, The Cartographers, and The Grasshopper Lies Heavy.

21st Century Psychedelic, PBL performance at San Antonio Museum of Art

Potter-Belmar Labs brings the psychedelic light shows of the 60s to the Post-Modern age with this live performance of moving image and sound, utilizing laptops and other electronics. Collaborating since 1999, artists Leslie Raymond and Jason Jay Stevens have performed live cinema across North America, in addition to exhibiting interactive installation art and single-channel experimental video. In keeping with the flavor of the Psychedelic show, PBL will perform their handcrafted audiovisual hallucinations, offering colorful optical fantasies and intriguing sound sensations.

Coverage of the New Media Caucus's Live Cinema Summit

Here is a very enthusiastic recount of the performances at the Live Cinema Summit, written by Nicholas Sagan. PBL was one of the live cinema performers at the event, and Leslie actually organized the whole thing. A quote from the article: "it was tremendous!"

There's also coverage, over here, of a round table discussion about the speakers' experiences as faculty members and directors in the field of New Media. Leslie, being both, was one of the guest speakers.

FURTHERMORE, Leslie also presented at this meet & greet event, and evidently influenced the naming thereof (who uses the word "colloquium" these days? PBL, that's who).

All of these things were part of New Media Caucus events for the 98th College Art Association conference, held in Chicago in February 2010.

PBL journeys forth to the northern tundra

This weekend, Leslie & Jason will trek up north to the icy land of Minneapolis to warm up the place with explosive performances (figuratively speaking; no actual explosions will occur, hopefully).

On Friday the 22nd at 7:30 PM, they'll bring their live cinema performance to Art of This, crowned "Best Art Gallery of 2009" by Minneapolis City Pages.

Then Saturday the 23rd at 1 PM, they'll perform on Medicine Lake (yes, on) as part of the Art Shanty Project, specifically as guests inside the Fanta Shanty. This is PBL's half of a bargain struck with the Art Shanty folks, in which PBL dared them to participate in Contemporary Art Month. Art Shanty director David Pittman & artist Stephen Rife came to San Antonio in July 2008 and sweat up a storm putting on a couple outdoor video screenings and a pyrotechnic performance... so now it's PBL's turn to go up there and freeze their butts off bringing live cinema where few dare step: the middle of a lake.

The Idea Fund, a re-granting program administered through Aurora Picture Show, DiverseWorks Artspace and Project Row Houses, and funded by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, has announced 2010 The Idea Fund Grantees. Of the more than 160 applications submitted to The Idea Fund from across Texas, 10 artists were selected. Potter-Belmar Labs is one of them!

Our project, Panorama Marfa, is part of a larger body of work reinterpreting the traditional panorama and cyclorama forms. This multiple-screen, live cinema performance in Marfa will include video shot in the West Texas landscape along with an original score.

From November 20 until January 15, the show Co-Existing and Co-Llaborating will be open at the SPACES Gallery in Cleveland, Ohio. Curated by Mary Magsamen of Aurora Picture Show, Co-existing explores the video art of artist couples who live and work together. The pieces offer a glimpse of the way each collaborative couple deals with sharing their physical and mental space, and how this dynamic affects and nourishes their artwork.

PBL's video "Double Thunder" is featured in the show, alongside work by by Emily Vey Duke and Cooper Battersby; Travis and Dana Hanmer; Darrin Martin and Jamil Hellu; Jennifer & Kevin McCoy; and Robyn Voshardt and Sven Humphrey.

Seeing Art San Antonio - Potter-Belmar Labs gets visited

Yesterday morning, a group of ladies led by Donna Simon dropped by PBL to get a little tour of the place, the studios, and the ideas behind the art. Coffee was served, art was seen and discussed, and good times were had.

The tour group got to see Leslie's video mixer in action, as well as a little peek of the animation process in the making of San Antonio Casts a Spell, which will be shown at The Lab in New York this December. There was some interesting discussion about video as a new medium, freer than painting or photography from the constraints and dogmas of hundreds of years of history.
Then they were led down to Jason's studio, where he showed them some fun museum exhibit props, among them a huge wooden combination lock that shows the way such mechanisms work. He also introduced them to his board games in progress, Orbit and a yet unnamed one featuring Buddhas in a labyrinth of movable walls.

Jason's good friend Ben Judson has a weekly show on KRTU called Free Jazz Hour. It's the only one of its kind, playing cutting-edge and non-idiomatic improvisational jazz. Yesterday, Jason co-hosted the show. He didn't have nearly enough time to play all the music he'd taken along, but did get to air a decent chunk of his inspiring free jazz collection.

Chalk It Up 2009

Saturday was a great day for working outdoors - not too sunny (ominously cloudy in fact), full of kids, and full of artists. Good day to draw a board game on the sidewalk. It didn't rain, fortunately!

PBL may be known for their work in video and new media, but the interactive and participatory aspect that they use in their video work translated very well to sidewalk chalk drawing. Dozens of kids took part in the life-size board game, and they liked it.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by, and thanks to Artpace for inviting PBL to be a Showcase Artist. It was a blast.

Art Outside!

If you don't have anything pressing to do this weekend there is some kind of art Woodstock going on at Apache Pass, Texas. From what I read at their website (go to it, it is very interesting), from the 9th to the 12th of October there will be all kinds of art among the trees: music, visual art, craft, performances, pretty much everything. It promises to be full of all kinds of fun. And PBL will be performing there too! So if you don't go for the nature, go for the PBL performance.

Potter-Belmar Labs will be doing their Fortune performance in a tent at sundown on Saturday, Oct 11. Inside, they will be reading audiovisual fortunes to small, intimate groups of people. Go get your fortune told!

Nature of Place Symposium

Prestigious yearly Canadian film festival "Antimatter", which is taking place on October 9-17 this year, will have Potter-Belmar Labs' short "Double Thunder" in its roster of prodigious screenings. While the program guide is not to be up at their website until mid-September, I happen to know that they will be playing Double Thunder on October 14.

Some history: dedicated readers may recall that PBL participated in the festival last year with their Fortune performance.

Art Prize at Grand Rapids, MI

Both Leslie and Jason are participating in the competition for world's largest art prize, aptly named ArtPrize. It's taking place in Grand Rapids, Michigan, from September 23 to October 10, and the winners will be chosen democratically by the public without the involvement of electoral colleges.

Both entries have proven success in San Antonio already:

Leslie will be showing her Icarus Overland piece, previously seen in the Multiples Show at David Shelton Gallery. Her venue is Lightbox.

Jason's entry is his Eleven Strata and the Planetary Boundary installation, as seen before at Joan Grona, to be shown at The Old Federal Building.

CAM is dead! Long live CAM!

In commemoration of this final July CAM, and in celebration of the DIY spirit of these 23 years of hot sweaty CAMs, everyone's invited to the Death of Contemporary Art Month Parade. Wear a costume, bring an instrument, and march for the Death of CAM.

The parade gathers at 7:45pm next Sunday at Tacoland Park (aka the San Antonio River tunnel inlet at Josephine Street) as dusk approaches. From there, we head south along the banks of the river in full regalia. We swarm the SAMA grounds, as they'll be leaving the gate open and some refreshments out for us! Then on to El Tropicano to partake in the remains of a fundraiser feast.

Mimi Kato will be there incognito as a horse, and Jason is going to wear gold spandex!
Captain Hills Snyder will lead the drum corps (corpse?). Bring something to bang along on - a drum, a bucket, a small child, anything percussive. And the Prime Eights will be documenting the parade, so be sure to wear your best and/or most creative funerary apparel!

The artist offers the audience a unique, virtual tour of eleven strata of atmosphere and ocean, on either side of the planetary boundary. As illustrations of the qualities of places from high in the outer Magnetosphere, through the Thermosphere, the Stratosphere, and down into Mesopelagia, Bathypelagia, and the deeper Abyss, Stevens presents a batch of mysterious experiments, curious handmade instrumentation, and eerie field recordings.

Featuring sculptures, a pair of paintings, and a pair of photographs, the centerpiece of the exhibition are two sound compositions, one each for atmosphere and ocean. These musical works are essentially performed by an ensemble made up of sculptures in the gallery, in coordination, generating a planetary rhythm and harmony. The sonic landscape varies dramatically throughout the space, but at any point can be contemplated as one work.

Beginning June 13th, the McDonough Museum of Art on the campus of Youngstown State University will open the exhibition Rust Fest, featuring the work of graduate students enrolled in MFA programs in digital arts and new media from eight universities across the United States.

The opening of the festival on Saturday, June 13 will include an exciting performance piece by Potter-Belmar Labs, presenting a live mix of music and video projection. Both artists perform from laptop computers augmented by external digital devices used to manipulate their palette of images and sounds. The performance begins at 7:00pm and will take place in the McDonough auditorium.

The McDonough Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00am until 4:00pm with extended hours on Wednesday evenings until 8:00pm. The exhibition and all related programming are free and open to the public. For further information please call 330.941.1400

Here, the works in the 47th Ann Arbor Film Festival competition are globally sited predominantly by zip code but sometimes by city or even country name. A hand-drawn map with pushpins denoting filmmakers' hometowns used to grace the Michigan Theater Lobby at film festival time. That map was the main inspiration for this video, which is essentially the same thing created using the media of our time.

Metaphor Public Art

Earlier in the year, Jason worked with a high school class at San Antonio's Fox Academic and Technical High School to create a work of public art, through ArtPace's Semester Program. The students wrote metaphors that captured something personal about their lives, and then worked with Jason to create short videos that illustrate the metaphors.

Leslie Raymond's new show LANDSCAPES puts the focus on the tried and true theme of the landscape. A primary genre in painting, landscapes generally depict views from nature. Here, Raymond presents a contemporary take on the subject. Broadening the vocabulary of the picture-plane through the use of the moving image, she incorporates video's inevitable language of time. This group of landscape images embodies artifacts of the passage of time (including lapsed time, movement through time and space, and time pressure) while simultaneously considering composition, color, shape and form. Each video loop composition in this series is displayed on its own flat-panel monitor, and is an edition of four.

Jason Jay Stevens presents his latest sculpture installation at Joan Grona Gallery, at the Blue Star Arts Complex, during San Antonio Contemporary Art Month.
The show opens with a reception on Thursday, June 26th, from 6 until 9pm, and runs through August 16th.
For "The Theoretical Fixed Point in the Turbulent Aeviternity (Come You Lost Atoms to Your Center Draw)," Stevens has combined work in fabric, wood, electronics, light, musical objects, and strange lightning bolts made from black shag carpet. The result might be a scene from an alternate dimension.
At one end of the gallery, a giant light box occasionally flashes the question, "Did you feel that?" referring to a mysterious event that makes the viewer question their sensitivity. Throughout the room, flying bed sheets imitate a firmament of angels, and flecks of gold outline otherwise invisible magnetic fields.

The Ann Arbor Film Festival is the oldest and most venerable festival in America showcasing experimental and independent films. It is always an event and a spectacle. If you're in the area, and you want to witness some incredible art, there is no better opportunity.

Mixing Chamber at Luminaria

Potter-Belmar Labs collaborated with San Antonio artist, Stuart Allen, to create "Mixing Chamber," on view for one day only, Saturday, March 15, from 10am until 10pm, at the San Antonio Museum of Art.

The Museum's Curator of Contemporary Art, David Rubin, has described "Mixing Chamber," which fills the Cowden gallery with light, colors, and sound, as "a giant, walk-through luminaria." We think he's pretty much nailed that on the head.
Not by coincidence only, downtown will be filled with contemporary art during the day and night of the 15th, as the city celebrates it's first-ever Luminaria Arts Night. There will be plenty to do and see. Don't miss it!

Don't miss the conversation Potter-Belmar Labs shared with Chris Kubick and Anne Walsh, known as Double Archive, appearing in the upcoming Spring 2008 issue of Art Lies Contemporary Art Quarterly. The interview is already posted on the Art Lies website. But be sure to buy the magazine, it's full of great stuff, including a DVD of video art curated by Andrea Grover of Houston's Aurora Picture Show, and is now available at Barnes & Nobles bookstores all over the United States.

The San Antonio Business Journal identified Potter-Belmar's Leslie Raymond as a "Women of Influence," including her with a number of outstanding ladies from the S.A. arts scene, in a special supplement to the March 7-13, 2008 issue.
